Abstract

In this talk I will provide an overview of the evolution of the Semantic Web; from the first visionary paper in 2001 authored by Professor Sir Tim Berners-Lee, the inventor of the Web, to the massive expansion of linked structured data currently available all over the Web. From a data mining perspective, I will explain the ways in which data have been syntactically and semantically structured in the Web using content enrichment vocabularies and description languages. I will also revise existing techniques to automatically transform unstructured Web contents into interlinked semantic data, and mechanisms to access these data, via SPARQL endpoints, semantic search engines, and other Web services. To conclude, I will present several real use-case scenarios and applications that illustrate the advantages of using semantic technologies for information access and retrieval. These applications include semantic extensions of well-known search engines such as Google, Yahoo! and Bing, the integration of semantic technologies into mobile applications, such as Siri, and the use of semantic technologies by institutions and organizations, such as the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) and the Open University, in the United Kingdom.
